About Shotgun at NSRG

Trap Shooting

Trap shooting is an exciting shotgun sport that challenges participants to break clay targets launched from a trap house at varying angles and speeds. Success requires focus, timing, consistency, and safe firearm handling, making it an enjoyable activity for both new and experienced shooters.

At NSRG, trap shooting provides an opportunity to develop shooting skills, enjoy friendly competition, and participate in a welcoming and supportive environment. Whether your goal is recreational shooting, improving your marksmanship, or preparing for competitive events, trap shooting offers a rewarding experience for all skill levels.

Please Note: NSRG currently offers Trap Shooting only. Skeet and other shotgun disciplines are not available at this time. Trap shooting is offered exclusively during scheduled club-organized events and is not available for casual or drop-in use. Participants should consult the club calendar and discipline schedule for upcoming trap shooting dates and times.

Shotgun Background

NSRG currently offers a Trap Shooting program for shotgun enthusiasts of all experience levels.

Trap shooting is one of the most popular clay target sports in North America and one of the three major competitive shotgun disciplines, alongside Skeet and Sporting Clays. There are many versions including Olympic Trap, Double Trap (which is also an Olympic event), Nordic Trap, and several national versions such as American Trap. In trap shooting, participants attempt to break clay targets launched from a single trap house at varying angles and speeds. The sport challenges shooters to develop focus, timing, consistency, and safe firearm handling skills.

The sport is in some ways a replacement for a game where the targets were live pigeons. Indeed, one of the names for the clay targets used in shooting games is clay pigeons. Clay targets were introduced in the 1880's.  The layout of modern trap shooting is different from skeet shooting in that there is only one house that releases targets and the shooters only move through 5 different positions.
